Well ... here's another one I just had to get out of my system.
"Dr. Who" also happens to be one of my favourite shows by the by.

Whew! ... I've managed to carve out a work space for my drawing down in a corner of my basement. I finished this off while dodging particles of grit and dust. Kinda felt like a character in one of those old movies where the military generals are hunkered down in a bunker, explosions going off all around, dust sifting down on them as they pour over the battle plans.
So the idea for this once again come from my favourite radio program "Coast to Coast A.M." .... thanks George!

OK, I have a confession to make here .... I got lazy with this one. This is from my sketch book. Normally I draw a rough outline like you see here and then re-do it with straighter lines, more detail, filled in with black ink etc. etc. yadda yadda .... I sorta have this hang around the place in my housecoat and bunny slippers attitude today and it transferred to my posting ... I like it.

FYI:
Over the next few weeks to couple of months my house is going to be torn up due to some extensive renovations. I'll make every effort to post something new weekly. I just won't gaurantee it. I'm going to be temporarily cut off from my "studio" and available time to create my "works of art".
Check back because you (I?) never know. I'm currently working on new stuff when I can grab a block of time as it drifts by the opening of my cave.
Thanks!

Chris.

I've come to the bright deduction I just may have jumped the gun here. Is this poor old Cletus's finale or just the beginning for him? I suppose I could have Cletus pop up now and again anywhere I choose along the time-line of history  .... OOOooo .... now there's an idea! .... The Misadventures of Cletus, Involuntary Time Traveler .... and from "when" did this angry little alien originate?

I got the idea for this while reading an article about hackers in China. Seems they're still going after gmail accounts then phishing for data and such.

I'm really not sure just what inspired this drawing. Could it have been that old Christmas carol that was rattling around my head on a recent warm summer August morning? ..... MWAHAHAAA .... only the Shadow knows ....

“Gaslighting” someone .....

I first heard this phrase used recently by my friend Catherine. Now me being me, my mind conjured up an image so far removed from the actual origin I was compelled to do some research and understand the meaning. Below is what I discovered.

Origins of the phrase, to “gaslight” someone:

It comes from the 1944 film called Gaslight...

From http://www.filmsite.org/gasl.html:

"... was about a diabolical, Victorian criminal husband (Charles Boyer playing against type) who systematically and methodically attempts to torment, menace, and drive his bedeviled, fragile wife (Ingrid Bergman) mad. Its title was derived from the frequent dimming and flickering of the gaslights. The phrase "to gaslight" someone (to deliberately drive someone insane by psychologically manipulating their environment and tricking someone into believing that they are insane), was derived from the film.

Here's what my mind immidiately jumped to when I first heard the phrase:

I was recently hanging about with a few friends and the subject of fear, more precicely "being afraid" came up. So guess where my mind went? ......

Wednesday, July13, 2011. **SPECIAL EDITION**

WARNING WARNING ... INVASION IMMINENT!!! ..... well, that's what it looks like anyway. These signs have been quietly posted around the municipality of Saanich. Are we being softened up for possible alien disclosure? ... is the threat of a flying saucer invasion a reality? ... do I need to get my tin-foil hat out of storage??

"Dream Girl" ... drawn by Ron McDowell around 19 ... ??? ... let's just say before my time shall we.

This was a huge (re)discovery I made last week! I had completely forgotten my dad had a love for drawing as well.
This little lovely was one of his favourites. So much so I was told by my mum he had it framed and proudly on display in their home.
For reasons unknown to me Dad put his pencil down before I was born. Somewhere buried in my house is a little sketchbook that was his. I remember he liked lampooning promenant American politians from the World War Two era. (I think)

.... and here I am playing with phrases again ....

Getting down to the last of my material from the beginnings with this. There might be two left then it's just the current stuff .... worts and all!
Here I was playing with a material called "Letraset". It's the shading used on the window, pilings, etc. I used to buy it by the sheet and literally cut & paste the stuff right on to the drawing .... low tech or what??!

This comes from my version of the "... Experience Has Taught Me That ..." department.

The moon has always been such a rich source of material for me. It just never gets old .... I have to credit George Noory's Coast To Coast AM for some of my ideas. At times the guests' topics send my brain spinning off, off, waaay off to areas no "normal" mind would go.

Back when I took an art class we were encouraged to try our hand at drawing charactures ... what can I say ...

Wednesday, June 8, 2011. .... a day early .... again!

Posting early again this week.
Above is another example of my love of playing with words and phrases. The inspiration for this came to me during a conversation with my son. I asked what he and his girlfriend had planned for their weekend and the reply was something like: "Oh, I think we might go garage sale-ing Sunday."

Back when our boys were little we would all load up the car and travel by ferry to Vancouver and spend a long weekend with my wife's parents. I believe this is a sketch I did from a photograph I took from Kitsolano Beach looking accross towards Vancouver's North Shore area. One of my few attempts at "serious" sketching.

Well, I'm off!

Yeah yeah I know, I'm really early with this posting. Well, I wasn't sure how well I could post using my little netbook. Now I know ... looks OK.
This one's from so long ago I didn't even date it. Not sure what that says about my state of mind back then not dating my work.
So anyhoo, I humbly offer this drawing as a bonus.(experiment is a more apt description) I'll be on the road the next couple of weeks and promise to make every effort to post.
... ???! ... OOPS ... seems I did date this. It's hiding in Smokey's fur on his left shoulder.
This getting old thing really sucks!

Wednesday, June1, 2011. .... a day early ....

It's been my experience in life some of what I thought at the time was my best thinking led me down roads to destinations and outcomes that left me thinking ... "WTF??! ... how did I end up here??"
Thus the inspiration for the above drawing.

This "gem" is new but at the same time old. What I present here is one of the drawings that never made it from my sketch book to a finished product some 21 years ago. So I finished it.

Here I am playing with words again. The caption "Fierce Canabulls" may be a bit hard to read.

Most people have heard of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse and when I did my due dilligence I discovered there is a fifth. This is what I found:

"Most Bible students focus only on the first four horsemen of Revelation 6. The phrase "Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse" is synonymous with frightening prophecies. But there is another horseman—a fifth, whose ride signifies a much different future and brings promise of a far better age to come." The Good News, A Magazine of Understanding

What they failed to mention? ....  there is a sixth horseman.

So, today's the day. Today I roll a couple of my current creations. I still have a few drawings left from my earlier times but those are from a time when my creativity was limited by how I perceived my world. Gone is the fear of what may offend some people. I'm drawing for me now and it deinitely shows.

I love playing with words. I carry a small notepad and pen with me. I never know when a word or phrase will catch my attention. The inspiration for this one came to me as I was listening to a radio show and  the guest mentioned the back side of the moon. Why do we rarely, if ever, see photos?
